DARBYâS MIND RACED as they walked back up the road to the barbed wire gate going into the old Miller place. Jasper held two strands of wire wide apart to let her slip through. She did the same for him. Their gazes met for a moment.
Sheâd taken her now loaded gun from her purse along with her penlight back at the car. Sheâd tucked both into her coat pockets. The spring night air had a bite to it. Still early in the year in Montana, the nights often dropped down close to freezing. She could see her breath as she walked, but she hardly noticed the cold.
What was Leviathan doing at the local cemetery in the middle of the night?
A dozen thoughts whizzed past, only one worthwhile. He knew someone who was buried out here. That would explain the flowers.
She stumbled in a gopher hole as they crossed a stretch of pasture. Jasper caught her arm, preventing her from falling headlong in the dirt. Sheâd been deep in thought. Not about Leviathan at that moment, but Jasper and what heâd told her. She hadnât been surprised. It made her sad. She suspected heâd been good at his job.
But it also explained why he appeared gun-shy at getting involved with anythingâespecially her. So why had he opened up to her? He had to be aware of the strength of the chemistry between them. How could he not feel it after that kiss the other night? Even if he didnât remember the other time.
They angled past the old farmhouse toward the pines that stood along the older cemetery fence. A newer cemetery was at the other end, closer to town. As they reached the trees, they both grew even more quiet. They crossed another barbed wire fence and then stepped over a low wrought iron one.
Headstones began to appear from out of the darkness with pines here and there. They wound their way through them, Darby being careful not to step on any more graves than she had to. They hadnât gone far when Leviathanâs truck suddenly took shape at the edge of the only road into this section of the cemetery.
Jasper touched her arm to get her attention, then leaned closer to whisper in her ear. His breath tickled her neck and sent goose bumps running all over her skin. âI think heâs just on the other side of the truck.â
She nodded and let him lead the way. As long as Leviathan stayed on the other side of his vehicle, they should be able to get closer without him seeing them. Another cloud shrouded the moon. Dark shadows spread across the tombstones and turned the hulking truck black.
At the edge of the road, Jasper stopped. She did as well. She could tell he was listening. It took her a moment, though, before she heard it. Singing. It was low, barely audible with only a few words coming to her on the slight breeze.
She felt her eyes widen as she locked gazes with Jasper.
